Marathon runner Derek Redmond fell to the ground in agony from a torn hamstring while running in an Olympic Marathon. While most would stop and leave the race, Derek got up and continued, limping in agony down the track, but determined to finish the race.
SOMETIMES WINNING JUST ISN’T MEANT TO BE
As he was hobbling on down the track, a man ran out of the crowd, pushed through security and came to Derek’s side.
This man turned out to be his father.
Putting his arm around his son – He said…
“You don’t have to do this.”
“Yes I do,” replied his determined son.
Together father and son continued the race. Just before the finish line Derek’s father let him go, to finish his race. This created a standing ovation from the crowd of approximately 65,000.
What made this moment special was that it brought into focus not just the near-heroic desperation of a single professional athlete but a much more universal theme: the nature of parenthood.
