Are you sick of getting rust on your hands each time you use your lawn mower or your favorite garden clippers with rusty handles?
Or do you have a nice car, but it looks like a bomb because the chrome on the tyre rims or bumpers are rusty?
With a little bit of aluminum foil (tin foil), Coca cola, a clean rag and very little elbow grease from you, you can get your rusty looking chrome items to look brand new. You can use any type of Coca cola for this, but diet Coca cola is the better choice as it isn’t sticky.
Method
- Tear off a 10-20 cm sized piece of aluminum foil and fold it in half so the shiny side is facing outward.
- Tip Coca Cola onto the rusted part you want to clean (a small section at a time)
- Rub the Coca Cola with the aluminum foil to remove the rust. You will notice the Coca cola beginning to turn black. This is normal as the oxidization process is removing the rust.
- Using a clean rag – wipe off the excess black liquid.

is Left with a Mirror Shine
TIP: Now that the rust is gone, applying a little car wax to your chrome item can help to protect it from further rust.

HOW IT WORKS:
Coca Cola has a small amount of Phosphoric Acid in it, which is the ingredient that neutralizes the rust and turns it black. It is the Phosphoric Acid in Coca COLA that gives it that tangy/tartiness taste.
The aluminum foil is finer than steel so won’t scratch your chrome. The oxidization of the aluminum foil is what draws the rust off of the more dense chrome finish.
Microscopic grains of aluminum oxide produced during the cleaning process creates a fine metal polishing compound. When mixed with the coke you added (a mild acid), it creates a paste that smooths and polishes the chrome surface.
NOTE: This method works best for surface rust.
